Hey Baby

Hey Baby
2008 / oil on canvas / 28 x 22"

While some of my previous paintings were limited to analogous colors in a field of white, in this new painting I experiment with a more exciting color strategy by adding a complementary color in the background.
Nessie

Nessie
2008 / oil on canvas / 22 x 30"

This painting pays tribute to everyone's favorite modern day dinosaur, the Loch Ness Monster. I particularly like interplay of the magenta wedge and the adjacent field of cadmium red.
Fertility

Fertility
2008 / oil on canvas / 22 x 28"

The "biological clock" is quite a force of nature, driving us towards decisions that we may not yet be prepared to make - for better or worse. I've also noticed that "water" seems find its way into all of my recent paintings. 8 glasses per day - I must remember to stay hydrated!
Filtration II

Filtration II
2008 / oil on canvas / 20 x 30"

This is a more organic interpretation of the "filtration" theme, where I experiment with letting go of the rigid geometric constraints that have characterized most of my recent work.
Refinery

Refinery
2008 / oil on canvas / 22 x 30"

My goal here is to capture the imposing presence of a large industrial facility. I personally find such buildings deeply disturbing, and I can't look at a belching factory chimney without feeling some sense of dread.
Filtration I

Filtration I
2008 / oil on canvas / 20 x 30"

This composition follows a substance through a filtration process. But this is a very "technical" reading of the painting, and I acknowledge that the composition also has a lot of personality - especially when rendered in flesh tones!
Hydroelectric

Hydroelectric
2008 / oil on canvas / 22 x 30"

Despite its merits as a renewable energy source, hydroelectricity seems like a dangerous proposition since water and electricity shouldn't be allowed to mix!
Shipping & Receiving

Shipping & Receiving
2008 / oil on canvas / 22 x 28"

My first paintings of 2008 are an extension of my abstract collages from this same time period. In contrast to collage, where details of the composition are beyond my control, the design of a painting can ideally be reduced to its essence.
Nailpolish

Nailpolish
2007 / oil on canvas / 22 x 28"

In contrast to the approach taken in Bather, this composition contains all the elements of the scene within the edges of the canvas. The figures are placed deliberately in order to yield a satisfying and interesting formal arrangement.
Bather

Bather
2007 / oil on canvas / 22 x 28"

The aim of this painting is to explore a sensuous and rounded style, while also adding background elements that extend beyond the edges of the canvas.
Two Dancers II

Two Dancers II
2007 / oil on canvas / 49 x 40"

The geometric constraints are varied for this composition, which incorporates more circular forms as a counterpoint to the sharp angular lines. The resulting painting has a very graphical style.
Two Dancers I

Two Dancers I
2007 / oil on canvas / 22 x 28"

This is an experiment in opposing forces, both in the dynamics of the figures and in the context of color and contrast.
Rocksteady DJs

Rocksteady DJs
2006 / oil on canvas / 40 x 53"

In this larger canvas I aim for a loosely worked interpretation of a trio of figures in motion. The painting succeeds primarily as an exercise in paint handling and color.
Musician III

Musician III
2006 / oil on canvas / 28 x 22"

The minimalist approach to this painting is an attempt to celebrate the simple, graphical nature of the circular form.
Musician II

Musician II
2006 / oil on canvas / 28 x 22"

Here I work towards a looser paint handling that embraces an element of chance, both in the placement of color and in the way the materials flow on the canvas.
Musician I

Musician I
2006 / oil on canvas / 28 x 22"

This painting explores a three dimensional approach to the same representational problem. The intention is to use the added dimensionality to facilitate more varied forms that may be twisted or revolved in space.
Compás I

Compás I
2006 / oil on canvas / 46 x 69"

Here the forms are composed in a simple network of lines that tie the figures together and suggest a communication. To me this is a successful composition that largely achieves my goals for this series of paintings.
New Watch

New Watch
2004 / acrylic and crayon on wood / 35 x 18"

This is the first painting in which I impose strict geometric constraints in an attempt to create forms that are simultaneously representational and abstract.
Giraffes

Giraffes
2002 / acrylic on canvas / 36 x 36"

This painting is inspired by Matisse's Dance, where the figures are contained within the edges of the canvas. But unlike Matisse's dynamic dancers these giraffes are very static and firmly rooted.
